Whether you’re a first time mum or been there before, planning a baby is always exciting! The Good Samaritan Medical Centre is a family focused practice offering medical, nursing and allied health services for pre-pregnancy, during and postpartum stages of your journey.
Consulting your GP is a great place to start when you’re planning to conceive to discuss and ensure the mother’s and baby’s health is in good condition throughout the pregnancy and beyond.
Pre-Pregnancy Counselling
Pre-pregnancy counselling is a session conducted with your GP before you conceive to discuss potential risk factors during pregnancy, health issues you may experience before you become pregnant. It will cover your overall physical and emotional health before you enter this incredible milestone. Your doctor will discuss the following issues and may undertake a series of medical tests to determine your health and risks before pregnancy:
- Reproductive history
- Current medications
- Family history of medical conditions
- Weight and diet
- Nutrition and supplements
- Workplace and home environments
- Lifestyle modifications
- Vaccinations
- Allied health checks (physiotherapy, counselling, dietitian)
Antenatal Care
Antenatal care is the care you receive during your pregnancy. You can discuss with your GP your birthing options which will include specialist obstetric care, public versus private hospital antenatal care as well as the ongoing growth of your baby and developmental milestones after the birth of your child. Your GP will liaise with your obstetrician and nurses as well as allied health to ensure your pregnancy is well under way.
Involving your GP in shared antenatal care means:
- Personalised care by your local doctor
- Flexible waiting times for your appointments
- Ongoing care by your GP for you, your baby and your family
